I learned about how the percentages work.
What I found challenging was the surfs up activity because working out the prices were hard.
How I worked out the surfs up percentages were I asked myself what is 50% or 10% of that number.

This term we have been learning all about the Marae. We have learned that…….

  • The Marae is an important focal point for the community.
  • The Marea is a place where tradition and customs can be carried out.
  • The Marae is a place where people can express their values with dignity.
  • There are many kawa ( protocols) that prevail on the marae.
  • Marae kawa (protocols) can differ between maraes and iwi.


We have focussed on some key concepts when doing this learning.
These are listed and explained in the table below.

Definition -

Tikanga
The correct procedure, custom, way of doing things. Eg Karakia, powhiri.
Pōwhiri
The pōwhiri (or pōhiri) is the welcoming ceremony on a marae.
Tangata whenua
tangata whenua are the local people who are connected to the marae, either though genealogy or by association.
Manuhiri
Visitors to a marae.
Tūrangawaewae
Tūrangawaewae give you a home base on a marae. This includes rights and obligations.
Whanaungatanga
Relationship, sense of family connection. Beloning.
Manaakitanga
Care for a person's well being. This includes the respect given to elders.
Aroha
Means love. Aroha can mean respect, concern, hosptality, and the process on giving.
